Senior executives at News International say it was Charles Colson who was implicated in Watergate, and not Andy Coulson.
But the similarities in the two men's last names has not gone unnoticed, and heads are being turned in the Rupert Murdoch Relaxation And Massage Wing of Scotland Yard.
Senior News International executives have rushed to pour water over any link between Hackergate (in which, allegedly, NI's news organizations persuaded the Met Police to cover up illegal phone tapping of prominent people which most likely did include the deputy prime minister John Prescott) and Watergate (in which the president of the United States authorized exactly the same thing to his political opponents).
Charles Colson eventually pled guilty to his part in the Watergate scandal. Andy Coulson will eventually have to do the same if it turns out he is lying.
