All
of the main tabloids, The Sun, The Daily Mirror, The Mail, all claim to be pro-England
and wave the flags on all of their English papers. And why not? For them it's
great business.
Be
careful: They are marketing their papers to an English audience. But that is all
they are doing. They wouldn't give a stuff about England if it didn't increase
their sales. Take a look at their papers they sell outside of England and we bet
the last penny in our pockets that they don't even mention England.
Why?
Because they write papers for a market.
Look
at their websites (we took pictures: The
Sun, The Mirror, The
Mail). As at 10:15am Saturday 3rd June 2006 (one week before the World Cup
starts) not a single St George's Cross is flying anywhere on their front pages
(OK The Sun has an ickle one, but that is very very small compared
to the space taken up by the flag on their English paper). The reason?
Because their websites are marketed to a broader audience outside England. It's
bad business to be associated with England in a broader audience in the UK, let
alone the world.
Don't
think for one second that the tabloids are behind England. The only reason they
are behind England is because there is money to be made.
