So,
is it fair to blame Jade Goody for saying things that many people say all over
the UK every second of every day? Probably. She acted abysmally in the Big Brother
house and she's made a fortune for being stupid, so she probably deserves everything
she gets. (Well, £4mn worth any way - Jade's estimated fortune).
Jade got caught, the fact is that most people who say that sort of stuff don't
get filmed for TV, and have the Chancellor of the Exchequer on tour in India at
the time. We wonder what would have happened to this story had Gordon Brown not
been in India last week, or that the victim of the bullying, Shilpa Shetty, was
not one of the most famous (and loved) people in India.
Jackie Stallone was bullied in Celebrity Big Brother last year, who then said
a thing?
What
happened this year on Big Brother was the usual bullying but with a few completely
unacceptable racist things being said.
Racism
is disgusting, it must be wiped out, and it will be, but it is still common within
the UK today, much more than the media normally shows. The media and government
seem to be taking a welcome lead, but they act far more liberally than the vast
majority of people in the UK.
Channel
Four should not be punished too much for broadcasting these comments. We should
all see this as a very uncomfortable wake up call. Let's have an open debate about
racist comments, criticize racism, demean racism, but let's not try to hide it
under the carpet or make out it doesn't ever happen.
The
first step will be for Shilpa Shetty to win Big Brother. Shilpa has a dignity
and a poise that we have fallen in love with. Channel 4 - the least you can
do for now is to show us a good Shilpa Shetty film in prime time.
