The
BBC is sacking people left right and centre at the moment because of their purge
on dishonesty. Good. However, the BBC seems to think it is still OK to continually
quote Michael Fish out of context, as a number of the BBC's outlets have been
doing over the last week.
It's
the 20 year anniversary of the October 1987 hurricane. So, let's crank up that
famous 'quote' from Michael Fish again:
"Earlier
on today apparently a lady rang the BBC and said she heard that there was a hurricane
on the way. Well don't worry if you're watching, there isn't."
This
quote is wrong because it is taken out of context. Fish said it, we see him say
it, but he was in fact referring to a hurricane in Florida, not the October 1987
UK hurricane. To report this quote properly you must put the bit in before the
quote to make it clear what he is actually talking about
It's
a complete disgrace that Michael Fish is continually reported in this way. Using
that quote out of context is exactly what the BBC is trying to stop, and it was
on a number of the BBC outlets this week.
