'Roy Kinnear Takes Over At Newcastle FC', An Apology

We would like to apologise to the family of the late comedian Roy Kinnear after we incorrectly reported that he had taken over as manager at Newcastle United Football Club.

The actor/comedian, who also wasn't the one with Les Dawson dressed up as a woman - that was Roy Barraclough, died more than ten years ago.

We fully understand the shock to Mr Kinnear's family, friends and the supporters of Newcastle Football Club, for this announcement which was made in a cynical attempt to sell more newspapers.

In the report we also said that Mr Kinnear's responsibility as manager would not include decisions on team selection. There actually was nothing wrong with that statement, what was wrong was that we reported that the person who would decide it would be a person called 'Dennis The Menace'. We would like to make it clear that Dennis The Menace does not now or has he ever worked for Newcastle United. I think we meant to write Dennis Wise, but nobody's sure.
